What Ride of the West actually shows

Ride of the West is a minimalist ink brush style illustration of a cowboy on a bucking bronc. Black on a warm parchment tone. That is the whole picture. No fence, no crowd, no dust cloud behind the horse.

The motion is raw and pared down. You read the arc of the horse first, then the rider, then the hat. From across a room it almost reads like a letterform. Step close and you can follow where the stroke went heavy and where it lifted. A few strokes of ink, and the whole ride is there.

The idea behind it

The drawing is inspired by East Asian xieyi brushwork, a way of working that says a lot with very few marks. That is the honest start and finish of it. Take a rodeo subject, draw it that way, and you end up with something western at heart that still sits quietly in a modern room.

That tension is why it sells to people who swore they did not want cowboy art on the wall. If restraint is your thing, our note on what western minimalism means goes further into it, and black and white western decor covers building a whole room on two tones.

Where it hangs well

  • A reading corner, centered over an armchair
  • An office, above the desk where you look up at it
  • A stairway or hallway, hung at eye level
  • A living room, as the one quiet piece on a busy wall

The parchment tone is warm, so it gets along with wood, leather and wool. Walnut and natural wood frames pick that warmth up. Black sharpens the ink strokes. White keeps it quietest. All four frame colors cost the same, so pick by room, not by price. The optional slim white mat adds breathing room around the strokes, which helps most in a hallway where people walk past close.

Prints that hang with it

Ride of the West holds its own alone, but it pairs cleanly. The Rider is a cowboy in profile under a black hat on warm rust red, the last piece of The Wild Ones collection, and the color break against parchment is a good one. The Galloper brings a tan mustang mid-stride on deep forest green, same minimal spirit, more color. Admit One is a vintage rodeo ticket in burnt orange, cream and navy with a bronc rider silhouette, which ties right back to the bronc in this print.

For three across a hallway, keep one frame color and one size the whole way. For a bigger wall, hang Ride of the West larger and let the others sit smaller beside it. More layouts in western gallery wall ideas, and if you want a set already put together, see Rodeo Night or browse The Wild Ones.

Who it tends to go to

Bronc riders, horse people, and folks who like minimalist art and did not expect to like a cowboy print. It also works as a gift when you do not know someone's taste well, because the palette is two tones and it does not fight anything already on the wall. We can send it straight to the recipient with a gift note. More ideas in the western art gift guide.

Questions and answers

Does the framed version come with glass?

What size of Ride of the West works best in a hallway?

11 x 14 or 16 x 20 reads well in a hallway at eye level, and the slim white mat gives the ink strokes a little room. For a wider wall, step up to 18 x 24.

Which frame color suits this print?

Walnut and natural wood warm up the parchment tone. Black sharpens the ink strokes. White keeps it quietest. All four frame colors cost the same, so choose by room.
